Biatrix — a quiet block puzzle that works offline

Biatrix is a falling-block puzzle that runs entirely inside your browser. There are no ads, no accounts and no gameplay tracking: your scores, settings and unfinished games stay in local storage on your own device. After the first visit the game keeps working without an internet connection.

Three ways to play

• Classic — the usual rules. Every ten cleared lines raise the level and the pieces fall faster.
• Zen — there is no way to lose. The pace stays slow and even, and if the stack reaches the top the board simply clears so you can carry on.
• Hardcore — the falling piece turns invisible the moment it appears. You can see the next piece, then you have to hold its position in your head.

Controls

On a phone held upright, swipe left and right to move, tap the board to rotate and swipe down for a hard drop. Turn the phone sideways and on-screen buttons appear instead. On a computer use the arrow keys, Z or the up arrow to rotate, the space bar to drop and P to pause.

Offline and installation

The game itself is small and is saved automatically on your first visit. The ambient soundtrack is much larger, so it is never downloaded without asking — you start it yourself in Settings, and you can delete it just as easily. On Android and desktop Chrome an Install button appears in Settings; on iPhone open the Share menu in Safari and choose Add to Home Screen.

Why play at all

Puzzles like this one are unusually good at occupying the part of the mind that replays worries. The task is simple, the feedback is immediate, and there is nothing to read or decide — which is exactly why it settles a restless head. Zen mode exists for the evenings when even a game over feels like too much.
